A Little Street Art from Portland and Tacoma

Next week Anner and I head back on the road for six weeks in Tanzania (YES!!!!), but that means there’s still time to regale you with a post or two from here in Seattle. This time I thought I’d do a quick, photo-centric post on the street art my dad and I saw when he came out to visit last week. Yep, he flew out here from his home in Atlanta and we had a truly spectacular time touring down around Portland and Tacoma. Wanna see what we saw? Simply read on…

This was on the side of a detached garage – love how the owner painted a note on it saying not to paint over it without asking!

We stayed in a lovely AirBnB on the north end of Portland near N. Mississippi Ave. It’s a hopping, up-and-coming area with tons of boutiques, restaurants, street art, and even a street art gallery! Yep, pdXchange was a nice surprise – definitely check them out if you’re in the area. We also explored the nearby Alberta district (we did the long walk between them). These are from both areas.

I think the grill in front really makes the whole photo…

I’m afraid I can’t tell you too much about most of these pieces – a lot of the art in the area simply didn’t appear to be signed. Definitely worth showing you, though!

GREAT garage doors. I think they’d be fun to drive up to every day…
There were a few walls simply filled to the brim with paste-ups. This one had art at least three stories up!
Now THAT is a memorial!!!
Now THAT is a memorial!!!
I think this was in downtown Portland, but can’t quite remember. Impressive, eh?

Heading back to Seattle, we stopped for a day in Tacoma and found a few nice pieces along 6th Ave outside of downtown.

Found this great alley filled with graffiti-style works. Thanks, Pa, for giving a sense of scale!
A graffiti wizard?
This piece was so long I couldn’t get the whole thing in one shot! This was a collaboration between Dkoy and Keger.
A close-up of the central bird. Really nice.

And I think I’ll finish by introducing you to local Tacoma artist, Joseph Brooks. He has his art around Tacoma, though I first saw it at a local store here in Seattle, Robot vs Sloth. His style is centered around mass groupings of characters and always filled with fun, bright colors. I linked his Instagram above – great stuff! Someday you may find a piece of his work in our house.

Some of the wonderful work of Tacoma-based artist Joseph Brooks.

And there you go! A quick intro to some of the street art to be found in Portland, OR and Tacoma, WA. If you get the chance, I highly recommend seeing it with this fine fellow here – my pa makes an excellent travel companion! šŸ™‚

The best Pa a fellow could have!
